Seven Songs for Cathi (a.k.a. Mrs. Pink)

1) "Street Map" by Athlete (album = "Tourist")
Athlete is THE BAND of the Fall for me, I've been listening to them nonstop since sometime in...October maybe?...when Rowanette Michelle (my #1 UK music source) sent me their first album. I got their second on iTunes a day later (you can get them both there). Not so alternative/indie/or anything, pretty much a real rock band. I am eagerly fucking WAITING on them to get their butts to Chicago.

2) "Hide & Seek" by Imogen Heap (on her new album and also on the OC mix whichever, maybe 4 or 5?)
This song has not left my mind since the first time I heard it, on I think the last episode of last year's OC, so sometime in May probably? Every time I move to a new playlist, I manage to find a reason to put it there. If you know Frou Frou (they had a song on the Garden State soundtrack), that's Imogen singing. This song is haunting in the best way, her voice is gorgeous, and I don't think I'll ever be sick of listening to it. I put in on a mix this fall, Rachael put it on a mix, and it'll probably be on my year-end mix as well. And today I bought tickets to see her at a tiny Chicago venue about 5 blocks from my house this January. WOOT!

3) "All My Little Words" by Magnetic Fields
Cookie sent me a mix with this on it. I've known some Magnetic Fields stuff occasionally, they're one of those crazy Indie bands that are really one dude who writes like 85,792 songs every year and puts out 8 albums under 5 different band names... This song gets me because of this: "Not for all the tea in China...Not for all North Carolina..." Toooooo funny.

4) "Like It or Not" by Madonna (on "Confessions on a Dance Floor")
This one is also a lyrics-driven tune for me: "I'll be the garden, you'll be the snake. All of my fruit is yours to take. Better the devil that you know..." Some of the lyrics on this album are, at best, juvenile, but this song has solid imagery.

5) "Wandering" by Ben Folds (off some Speed Graphic EP or something)
This song was played at the end of a recent Everwood episode (not THAT recent, maybe a month and a half ago). It's just beautiful. The piano chords at the beginning of the chorus really get me = since I've been playing so much recently? Don't know why. I never listened to Ben Folds in the past, but then I picked up his recent solo album on a lark in the record store (damn listening stations) and really liked it. This, however, is an oldie.

6) "It Ain't Me Babe" sung by many different people but WRITTEN BY Bob Dylan, fucking musical genius
One sign that a song truly kicks ass is if you love it in any, and every, iteration. I hadn't listened to this in ages, but then my boyfriend Joaquin Phoenix sang it in "Walk the Line" (along w/ Reese) and now I've got a little playlist with their version, John & June's version (3 different ones of that), Bob's original version, Joan Baez's version... It's a great fucking song, people. "I'm not the one you want, babe, I'm not the one you need... To protect you and defend you, whether you are right or wrong... Someone to die for you and more...It ain't me you're looking for."

7)"Arcadia (Sickened by Everything)" by Love Story in Blood Red (and you can get it off their web site here)
I got an urgent email from Mindy the other day telling me this group almost made her miss her exit in Jersey and I needed to go check them out immediately. This song is definitely worth it. So now you know.

BONUS = "She Is" by The Fray (from "How to Save a Life"). Just came up on the pod as I was typing this. It's good.

and WHAT I WISH I COULD BE LISTENING TO = "My dress is hung" (or something like that) by Kim Taylor, who sang it the other night when I saw her open for Over the Rhine. It'll be on her album this Spring. Frankly, Kim, I'm not sure I can wait that long!!!

I so love it when you write about music.

The Bob Dylan/your boyfriend Joaquin movie thing reminded me of the good Bob song/River moment in Dogfight. I think that was "Don't Think Twice".

I like The Turtle's version of "It Ain't Me Babe" too.

Typepad is up again, and I've republished my blog. But of course I know you weren't talking to me. I'm only fooling myself. Heh.

It just kills me that "I Got You, Babe" was Sonny Bono's attempt to write a pop version.

So did Typepad's brief demise push you into publishing this? Because if so, I take back all of those nasty incantations that I made....

Thanks.
