Re-Entry = Rough.

So when I went to pick up my lunch, it seemed that all the women were wearing gloves while none of the men even deemed it cold enough to wear a jacket. Is it a temperature thing or a style thing (gloves being stylish, n'est-ce pas?). I myself was wearing gloves, since they so prettily match my coat & scarf, and because I really had no clue what temperature it now is since the last time I was outside was at 6:02 a.m. and that early in the morning, I always think it's cold, because it's the asscrack of dawn and I'm still asleep. But whether it's glove weather or not, it's definitely coat weather.

Did I ever tell you about my ex-Steven's friend Aaron who once participated in a 'who can go the longest into winter without wearing an overcoat over their suit' contest at his office? You put money in the pot each week that you continued to commute sans jacket. He won 5 grand! No joke. Made it into February. Of course that was New York, where it never got cold enough for me to wear my real winter jackets in the 13 years I lived there.

So I'm eating this hummus & veggie sandwich from Cosi. Which is good. But I'd hesitate to call it "veggie." I mean, throwing cucumbers, tomatoes and onions on a sandwich is more of a condiment situation, don't ya think. Something that could legitimately go on any sandwich shouldn't really be considered a main ingredient. It's like those freaks who eat "cheese" sandwiches. Unless it's grilled, that ain't a sandwich. Or "samwich". Or "sammys" as I once liked to call them. Baloney[sic] sammy please! Ha ha ha ha ha.

So when you got home from Rhinebeck, were you well rested and ready to face the world again? Or has your week gone something like this:

  • Sunday night go out to dinner in NYC with old friends, and then stay up way past any of your bedtimes watching DVDs.
  • Fail to get any sleep due to cat I'm allergic to pawing my shoulder and trying to burrow into my covers, when he wasn't underneath the bed pawing at the mattress from underneath.
  • Have minor morning catastrophe with no cabs to be found in a 10 block radius and walk halfway to Grand Central before you find one.
  • Have blackberry completely cease to receive messages, although continuing to send. What good is sending without receiving?
  • Find that you only have time for a one hour nap after your plane lands before you have to go to work.
  • Work. Yuck.
  • Get up the next morning and work again. Yuck.
  • Pick up mail and see that whatever joker picked up the bills at Cingular's lockbox, decided to scratch out Cingular's address (which they obviously printed themselves on the remittance slip) and labeled your payment "return to sender" causing the post office to return to me my bill that I paid on the 10th, that was due on the 18th, and is now late. Yeah, that's a funny joke. It's been years since I've paid a bill late and I cannot tell you how much that pissed me off or how nasty I had to be on the phone to not have to pay a late fee.
  • Spend two hours on phone fixing Blackberry and one hour on phone trying to figure out what the fuck is these people's (unrelated) problem(s).
  • Get up and go to work again (and again Yuck) but get in a cab without having any cash in your wallet. Smart!
  • Continue to have the splitting (allergy related (my belief) or the mystery cold that has gone on for 3 weeks related (the Accu's belief)) headaches every day.

And that is really just the tip of the iceberg. If I told you more, I'd probably self combust.

So Rhinebeck. Yeah, yeah, it was fine. Same old, same old. Avoiding scary bloggers who seem to think they know me but I don't know them. Trying to keep a lid on the wallet and, fortunately, having Silvia always nearby to veto bad purchases. Knitting picots and short rows in a pathetic Claudia imitation. Drinking smirnoff watermelon, and bacardi raspberry, and some bad beer, and some bad bad food contrasted with some good good food. Seeing Amy for 10 seconds before she left for Indo and bringing Kysa to her first wool festival and watching Alice get super tipsy and hilarious "NO -- MY NAME IS ALICE!" and hangin' with my NY knittin' buds only a few of whom I knew before I moved. Finally spending more than two seconds with Carrie, who I've only been friends with for a zillion years since we were both in the pretty posies stable, during which time [the conversation time not the pretty posies time] I got the hard sell on moving back to New York which is doubly hilarious considering the girl lives in Athens herself. Also got to chat with Sarah B. as well who has the cutest haircut ever. Finally met Maryse in person.

Now I've got a million things to do, watching Lost season 2 so hopefully will be caught up on 3 by the end of the hiatus for the second half (if not earlier). Need to clear out the TIVO/DVR queues and perhaps reconsider the currently quite demanding TV schedule. Need to baste the Strippers quilts, and get moving on my newest project which again will be saved for a later post. Finish that damn ribovili and MOVE ON. Consider stash sales. Again. Get caught up on French. Go check out the new camera place that might have better darkroom setup. Visit the nephews without 100 other kids there for a bday party. Wait, did I sign up for Nano. Damn you, Marrije. Have I bought tickets to too many concerts too close together again? Have I listened to all the new albums I've bought? How big can the to-be-read pile get before the apartment implodes? Blah blah, blah blah, blah blah.

My plans are to NOT leave Chicago in either November or December, other than Milwaukee for Turkey Day which given it's about a 2 hour drive at most does not really count as leaving Chicago, although I will be staying with friends who have kids, which as you must know, can sometimes be worse than water torture. We'll see how these two months play out. I need some rest people. I'm old. I'm ugly. I'm fucking tired as hell. I NEED MY SLEEP.

That is all.

Sorry about that bad bad food. We had no idea where there was good good food to be found.

Old and ugly my ass, friend. Oh wait, my ass IS old and ugly.

I'm all for the moving back to NY. Yes, I am. Though I sure could use a trip to Chicago some time.

hmm. super tipsy, yes. I don't even remember the context for that outburst...

Posted by: alice at October 25, 2006 01:58 PM

Oh that re-entry sounds sucky. I personally didn't even attempt to go home until the 6AM flight on Tuesday. Even worked a half day yesterday (albeit sleepy and useless).

Hope life is ironing out and you're getting some sleep.

Isn't Christmas in December, and weren't you going to go to London for Christmas?

Posted by: Mariko at October 25, 2006 02:07 PM

phew...well at least i'm not one of the scary bloggers. i'm really glad i went but the whole not having time to chat with anyone was really disappointing.

at least your train didn't hit a truck ;)

Yes, move to New York! Think of all the closet space you'll save, not needing winter coats. The first winter I lived here, I don't think I wore a coat at all more than four or five days out of the whole season. Sweaters and scarves were plenty.

london is january dude, not christmas. :)

Re-entry was super hard (always is after these fiber fests). I saw you several times at Rhinebeck but it was never the right time to say hi. So hi.

Posted by: Sarah at October 25, 2006 03:36 PM

Dude. Rhinebeck was fun. Watching you cringe at large group meetings was funner. Watching Alice hit her head on the table was super fun. And also, you are super pretty, and I know cuz I just saw you in person. UP CLOSE. Don't argue.

Posted by: Carrie at October 25, 2006 04:43 PM

You have made me damned tired just by reading this.

Just sayin'.

Posted by: claudia at October 25, 2006 07:10 PM

God, I feel evil now for cheating you into doing Nano... If it's any consolation I don't have any time for it AT ALL this year myself. We could both do 50.000 words of rant about how there aren't enough hours in the day, perhaps?

Posted by: marrije at October 26, 2006 02:53 AM

Frankly I am glad that in your Rhinebeck recap you talked more about booze than yarn.

Posted by: Heidi at October 26, 2006 02:39 PM

Dude, that was hilarious. And unless Alice had two tipsy outbursts, what happened was you asked me who the person I was most psyched to meet was, and I said someone else's name.

I, too, have had a sucky re-entry, and I haven't even been home yet. Here's mine in a nutshell - My flight gets in late after being stuck on the runway, I get in the car around 11 p.m. to drive nearly 3 hours for work, Around 12:30 I hit a deer, at 1 I am tired and can't find a "real hotel", finally the next morning I went to the wrong place for work.

Dang, I'm comandeering your comments, but it was great to get to hang out a bit at the hotel! Thanks for the haircut compliments. :-)

It's drizzling again. Get under the covers, grab a good book, and you'll be sleeping in, erm, 2-3 minutes.

I'm reading Marcus Aurelius, one good man, one really good sleeping pill [and when you wake up, head is screwed on straight].
