NaBloPoMo 9: Happy Haulidays! ;)

Thanks to Steph's post, I just found out about this awesome "win a bunch of books" contest!!

So, Chronicle Books, publishers of all sorts of awesome stuff, is having a pretty remarkable giveaway. They’re giving away $500 worth of books to one blogger and one commenter on the winning blog post, plus $500 worth of books to a charity of the winner’s choice. Check out the details here. It was a lot of fun to put my dream list together; $500 goes a long way when we’re talking about books, even nice, hardcover books.

Here's what I'd like for my $500 worth of books:

1. Ruby's Wish -- I read this book in a classroom I observed in last year and just loved it. I definitely need my own copy!! $15.99

2. Jacob Lawrence in the City -- This book has GORGEOUS art is one reason and it's URBAN is another. I'm going to be an urban teacher and I find myself everywhere on the lookout for books that my future students can relate to / see themselves in. Too many kids' books are about farms and rural life! $7.99

3. Dream Carver -- I don't know this book but it certainly looks intriguing!! $16.95

4. Mini Masters Boxed Set -- The earlier you introduce your kiddos to cultural touchstones like these master paintings, the sooner they can find their way into those universal conversations. These look like a lot of fun! $19.99

5. Seeing Beyond Sight -- This book sounds like an amazing project. So intriguing. $24.95

6. Life on the Lower East Side -- I lived in NYC for 13 years, the longest I've ever lived anywhere, and still really consider it home. Streetside NYC photography? IS MY FAVORITE. :) $29.95

7. Closer -- A young photographer I hadn't heard of, but winning that ICP award is seriously impressive so I'm definitely interested to see more! $27.50

8. Days with My Father -- This looks like a book that might break my heart. Personal projects like this are always really interesting to dig into. $19.95

9. Rebus -- You know, expensive art books are one of the FIRST things to drop out of one's budget in hard times. The perfect way to use a contest like this one!! $45

10. Handheld Pies -- Is there anything better than hand pies? COME ON NOW. $19.95

11. Dante's Inferno -- These modern illustrations sound fantastic. $24.95

12. A Simple Plan -- I've heard a lot about Gary Soto's YA fiction these days. I'd love to check out his poetry. $14.95.

13. Mobile Art. -- I love mobiles!! $19.95

14. Subversive Crossstitch -- A book I would never allow myself to BUY given how little crossstitching I do and will llikely ever do again at this point. But if I'm not paying for it... $14.95

15. Sublime Stitching -- As with book #14, I very rarely allow myself to purchase craft books these days, especiallly ones I will likely love to look at but not necessarily USE. However, if I could WIN said craft book, then I'm all in! $19.95

16. Kyuuto Japanese Wool Embroidery -- And another! $14.95

17. Whip Up Mini Quilts -- There are a couple patterns in this book I've been mooning over for awhile. $24.95

18. The Havana Guide - Cuba is a place I may never be able to (legally) go. And it looks so pretty! $29.95

19. MAPS - Maps are so cool. $50.

20. City Walks: Rome -- Rome has been on my to-do list for a very, very long time. $14.95

21: City Walks: Toronto -- As has Toronto. Only been there on a layover or two. $14.95

22. DIY Fashion -- I do love to get inspired by this kind of book. $24.95

Total = $497.67

And the charity I would want Chronicle to give an additional $500 worth of books to would be Open Books Chicago, one of Chitown's well-known literacy promoters. Also note that if I win, I get to choose one commenter to ALSO win $500 worth of books. YAY lucky you too! We are SO going to win! :) Heh! (FINGERS CROSSED!)

AND SPEAKING OF BOOKS!!!

My friends are so awesome!!!

YAY!!! Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who sent books and money my way!!! I have 118 copies sitting here and still some paypal money with which to buy the remaining 2! That covers all of 7th and 8th grades!!! YAY YAY YAY YAY YAY I am so nerdily excited about this. I'm going to use the extra money to do some replenishing of this teacher's classroom library as she has way too many 4th grade books in her 7th/8th classroom. My 7th graders will be there next year too so that will be a gift that keeps on giving.

Seriously -- thank you so much from the very deepest places of my miserable broken yet well-meaning heart. Y'all made me cry.

:D I put Subversive Cross-stitch on my list too. I already have Sublime Stitching and I rarely have time for it but when I do... I just love Jenny Hart's quirky patterns.

Good luck!
