Quilting Swatches.
So the Biggie Stars back and fronts are made and sandwiched together with batting. Binding is also made. Time to think about the quilting. I don't have the mental space and/or shoulder strength (doing really well! but still healing from surgery) for free motion right now so I'd pretty much ruled that out awhile ago. I had diagonal lines in my head...but now that I see them on a block, I'm thinking no.
Yes, I could do them further apart but no matter what you do, you're breaking up star points somewhere. I also tried a grid but considering this quilt is 80 inches-plus square...that's a LOT of lines. I want it to look good but I also want to be done.
Then I tried this. Echo lines on all the star legs, plus a single criss cross.
It creates an interesting secondary pattern on the back.
I'm feeling good about it. Then I'll just ditch around the QSTs blocks that fall between the stars.
And yes I'm using pretty dark thread, but remember the alternate blocks are dark browns & purples. Using really light thread is going to way stick out on those and I don't want those blocks to be the ones that are highlighted to your eye. I'd rather the dark thread draws your eye to the stars instead.
Ah, there's just nothing like the texture of a quilted grid though, is there?
And in that shot you can kind-of just see the variegation in the thread.

have you thought about random squiggles? I always resort to that when I have a big quilt and don't want to be stressed by straight lines that aren't straight.
And it 'scrunches' up the quilt nicely after washing...
And this is why I always turn to you for advice on how to quilt my quilts. You're a pro. I love the last design. I'm also becoming a huge fan of stitching in the ditch. This quilts going to be fab.
