« Little Pinkie is done! | Main

Uh-oh, new project alert.

So, yes, I am PLANNING on going back to the TWO (matching) Friendship Star quilts very, very soon. (Here are some of the blocks I've already finished, and here.)

But first I decided to see if my idea for Zoey's quilt was going to work. Um hello, are these not the sweetest quilt blocks you've ever seen?

zoey1.jpg

They're Pinwheel String blocks from Gwen Marston's book "Liberated String Quilts and I'm using the Joel Dewberry aviary fabric I recently added to the stash.

My plan is to use dark pink or orange to create the pinwheel in each one. They're pretty teeny tiny though, only about 5x5.

zoey2.jpg

You will need sashing (or something) in the end anyway, so I thought, hmmm, what if I lattice around each pinwheel with the stripey fabrics from the set (using the pink stripes around pink pinwheels and the orange stripes around the orange pinwheels)? It makes the blocks a better size anyway and then no sashing the whole thing in the end (or not unless I want to).

zoey3.jpg

What do you think? Does it work for ya? It'll be a bunch of crazy pink & orange stripe meetups between blocks. (Or I could lattice around again with a calmer fabric, like the bird print or something.) Yes? No? Maybe so?

WAIT STOP THE PRESSES

Maybe what bugs me about the pink stripes is how i made them go OUT from the original block in every direction (i.e. some horizontal, some vertical)...

What if all the lattice stripes were horizontal, kind of like this:

And then when they were up next to each other, it would be like this?

zoey5.jpg

Or maybe y'all are fine with the pink stripes as is. I don't know! I NEED OPINIONS. Thank you for your time. And good night....

Love the blocks - but switch the orange and pink for the sashing, maybe. My eye wants to see orange/pink/orange/pink.

I do like the stripes all going outward, rather than all running horizontal. And I LOVE the pink woodgrain fabric.

I like the first version of the stripes better. That block is so adorable.

I like a mixture of the stripes--so the long ones going vertical and the short ones going horizontal. Then match them up--so that the long "sashing" between rows all goes vertical and the sashing between blocks goes horizontal. Does that even make sense?

I like how the stripes go out in the pink ones...I would continue to do it like that. Then, to put it all together I would add white sashing between with little posts in the sashing (right where the 4 squares meet there would be a little square of color...in maybe solid pinks and oranges) That's what I would do. And I would have to say that they are the sweetest little blocks. LOVE 'em.

I'll be the contrary one and say I like the idea of the stripes all going the same way. But what looks so cool about that is the way the stripes match up and flow into each other, which might be a large pain in the ass to cut and piece. I like Juno's idea about switching the pink and orange for the sashing, though.

I like the stripes on the pink one best!

I'm with Juno -- I would put the pink sashing with the orange blocks and vice versa. And I definitely like the sashing done as you have with the pink block with all the stripes radiating outward.

No matter which you do, the central blocks are really lovely. The fabrics you're working with are great!

I think the pink one in its current incarnation is really adorable, but maybe when they're all together, more unity of direction (? is that what I mean?) would be good. But if you do that, keep one block like that and make a .... a...something with it because I love it!!!

super cute squares. loving this one. and I like the pink one with the stripes not all the same direction. although am intrigued with the idea to have pink block, orange stripes. also as cute as this is I am all cool with you going back to the friendship star quilts :)

First, I love pink and orange together, and I love the pinwheel. I think I prefer the stripes going out in all directions best.

Love pink and orange together. Love these squares, and I agree with those who like the striping on the pink better than on the orange and think they should match.

They're all gorgeous (I know, I'm no help).

All your quilts are glorious.
