Is there really a difference between corned beef and pastrami?
And those of you who know what the difference is, is it something I NEED to know?
And those of you who know me, which one is it I like? Or do I like both?
Technically I needed the answers to these questions 10 minutes ago on my way to Finklestein's, but I'll still accept responses now.
In related news, it's kinda sad that I detest mustard, pretty much unconditionally (99.9%).

I thought I detested mustard too, until one fateful plane ride where we were served turkey sandwiches on very dry bread with no condiments but a little foil packet of dijonnaise. So now I only detest it about 75%.

Got your back on the meat issues...

Which says:
JD Diet Asks: What is the difference between corned beef and pastrami?
Andy Sez: The difference is in how you make 'em.
Both usually start with a brisket. Corned beef is cured in a brine -- a salt water solution. Pastrami is given a salt and spice rub, dry cured, smoked, and cooked. Same meat, different treatments, different results.
The main difference, however, is that corned beef is better. At least according to me.
Just don't tell the judges I said that.
(Judges' Note: Andy, you are insane.)

Please tell me you don't use mayo instead. Because mayo with either corned beef or pastrami is so wrong you'd never be right again.

Jesus girl, have you been gone from NY that long? Of COURSE there's a difference. And Em is right, if you are putting mayo on either, we might just not let you back in this city.

I never knew the difference, either -- my girlreactioneducation continues! I can't abide either one, though. But I could eat a baseball mitt if it had the right kind of mustard on it. Proof that important differences need not divide good friends.

Are you talking about all kinds of mustard or just the crappy yellow stuff?
There are some very good kinds of stone-ground out there, enough to make me make my own one of these days. One of the nicest parties I went to was this girl's going-away-to-chef-school thing, where she made giant pretzels with homemade mustard. Soooo good. And before that I hated mustard too.

Meat, who knows, but you don't like mustard?! When I make things with mustard in, I always eat a spoon out of the jar as well cos I love it so much! That's a bit gross though really.

Hmmm...I go with Silvia on this. Corned beef is better. It seems to me that pastrami has all sorts of peppery stuff around the edges, which I prefer on bacon - not on sandwich meat.
Once you're done eating, though, you can pass the food through your knitted digestive system.
