Lyrics of the Afternoon.

Got stopped by a lady cop
She got me thinking I can date a cop
Cause her uniform pants are so tight
She read me my rights
She put me in a car, she cut off all the lights
She said I had the right to remain silent
Now I got her hollering, sounding like a siren
...
I make her wear nothing but handcuffs & heels
And I beat it* like a cop
Rodney King, baby. Yeah, I beat it* like a cop.

-"Mrs. Officer" Lil Wayne.

This is actually sung as a kinda tender make-out song, or as tender as you get on a rap album, I guess, with a sing-songy sweet chorus. It really kinda cracks me up.

*"it"? or "her"? Hard to say...

Complete Brain Breakdown of the Morning

Ah, ah ah ah, Hmmm, hmmm, hmmm, hmmm, hmmm, hmmm*... "warm hand"...hmmm hmm... "into mine"... hmmm hmmm hmmm hmmm....

Over and over and over in my head this morning. Could not remember a) more lyrics, b) song name, c) artist (so I could have just pulled the damn thing up on the Pod) for the life of me. Grrrrr.

Sea Wolf "Neutral Ground": Ah ah ah ah, But here in the sky, lights flash before our eyes, and I feel your warm hand slipping into mine.

Good grief.

Song of the Drive Home Last Night that Drove Us Nuts Not Being Able to Remember What the Fuck Song It Was

I had to text myself lyrics to look up when I got home. Stupid moron.

Picture yourself in a living room
your pipe and slippers set out for you
I know you think that it ain't too far
But I...
I hear the call of a lifetime ring
felt the need to get up for it
oh you cut out the middleman
get free from the middleman

You got no time for the messenger,
got no regard for the thing that you don't understand,
you got no fear of the underdog,
that's why you will not survive!

I wanna forget how convention fits
but can I get out from under it?
Can I cut it out of me?
Ah...
It can't all be wedding cake
It can't all be boiled away
I try but I can't let go of it
Can't let go of it
Uh huh

Cause you don't talk to the water boy
and there's so much you could learn but you don't want to know,
You will not back up an inch ever,
that's why you will not survive,

...

The thing that I tell you now
It may not go over well
And it may not be photo-op
the way that I spell it out

But you won't hear from the messenger,
don't wanna know bout something that you don't understand,
You got no fear of the underdog,
that's why you will not survive! (Hey!)

RS #1054 (guitar heroes)

Check out: Tokyo Police Club "Elephant Shell" (current album) and "A Lesson in Crime" (06 EP).

Quote of the day: But Monks feels he's constantly improving as a singer. "I just started doing this technique called 'warming up,' " he says dryly. "It really helps." -from Gavin Edwards 1/2 pager.

The new (and latest self-titled) Weezer gets 3 stars. I'm not sure. Fleet Foxes gets 4 (I bought it and I LOVE it). And latest Solomon Burke and new Fratellis also get 3. (They played a great set at Lollapalooza last year.)

My Morning Jacket gets the lengthy (and very positive) review. I'm not sure I'm convinced. I did NOT like listening to "Z" AT ALL. But I did enjoy them at Lollapalooza when I wasn't expecting to. And this album sounds much more upbeat. Hmmmm.....

Also considering the Ting Tings who get 3.5 stars and a very positive review of their poppy album

Patheticness of the Day

This really pretty, beautifully melodic, lovely song off Joe Purdy's latest album is TOTALLY MAKING ME CRY. And the worst part is, it's called "Ode to Sad Clown."

COME ON NOW PEOPLE. It is an ode to a sad clown and the lyrics are totally making me cry. Can you get more pathetic and stereotypic than that? I think I better go to bed.

(Nonetheless, I assure you it is a good song. Regardless of the pathetic person listening to it.)

I used to hear the children play
used to hear the birds sing
one day they just stopped
and I don't hear them anymore...

I got caught in this whistling wind
doin my best to regret these sins
Lord would you forgive me
if you know I'm gonna do it again
it's not that I'm not sorry Lord,
it's just that I'm not strong
Oh 'cause when that woman looks at me
I cant remember right from wrong...

Said by my Dad, to my Mom, in the midst of reporting to her about how AWESOME Battlestar Galactica is (he's halfway through season 1, disc 1 (the mini-series), he had to hang up to get back to it but called me midway through to rave), which he just started as I sent him all the discs as an early Birthday present:

In somewhat related news, if you normally order a "tall" but then one day by accident you order a "grand" because you can't remember what the stupid word they substitute for "small" is, well you may have a problem the next however many days later it is when you without realizing it order a "tall" again and then it comes and it's gone in two sips and you think what the hell happened to my drink, why was it so SMALL. Lyrics of the Afternoon

Not only does it have an awesome beeboppy '60s feelin' to it, but also there are a LOT of good lines in The Magnetic Fields "Too Drunk to Dream" (from Distortion, a pretty kickin' album that sonically certainly lives up to its name) but here are three of my faves:

I've got to get too drunk to dream because I only dream of you.

I've got to get too pissed to miss you or I'll never get to sleep.

I've got to get too fried to cry or I'll be crying all night long.

Mmmm, making me thirsty.

Quote of the Day

On my cab ride in this morning, I had the horror of listening to an interview with some completely nuts evangelical who I believe was named Richard Lamb (?? not that I really care if I am accurate on the dude's name) all about the sanctity of marriage and how evangelicals will never vote for a Demoractic (i.e., pro choice) candidate and blah blah blah. Despite the horror (I seriously got the gag reflex at one point, his comments were so ridiculous), and again wondering what it is about the SEPARATION of church and state that people such as he refuse to understand...

he did provide a moment of humor when he commented on the current battle for the Democratic nomination:

I feel sorry for Senator Clinton. She's trying to conduct a job interview and Obama's on a date.

Hilarious and very accurate of how the campaigns are being run / experienced by the public, I'd say.

Song of the Day

"Gravedigger" - Willie Nelson (from Paste sampler #40, off his album "Moment of Truth")

Dude, he works "Ring Around the Rosie" into it; come on now. His voice is such a perfect combination of melodiousness and gravel. I neverrarely* buy his albums but every once in awhile I come across a tune of his I love. He's a better lyricist than I've heard him given credit for. You should never have to bury your own babies. And have you seen Songwriter? Because I love EVERYTHING about that movie, including him, his acting, his singing, and his humor. But it's one of those movies that I'm not sure anyone other than me and my Dad ever watched (Dad is a big Alan Rudolph fan).

Song of the Day.

"The Guy that Says Goodbye to You Is Out of His Mind"
Griffin House

You don't need to change
A thing about you, Babe
I'm telling you, from where I sit,
You're one of a kind

Relationships, I don't know why,
They never work out and they make you cry
But the guy that says goodbye to you is out of his mind

Well I've been down and I need your help
I've been feeling sorry for myself
Don't hesitate to boost my confidence

Well I've been lost and I need direction
I could use a little love protection
What do you say, Honey, come to my defense

I'd stand up for you if it's what you need
And I can take a punch, I don't mind the bleed

As long as afterwards you feel bad for me

You give me all of your attention
I've got deep desire and it needs quenching
And I think that's pretty plain for you to see

Well enough about me and more about you
Because that'd be the gentlemanly thing to do
I hope you like your men sweet and polite

I thought I was done with telling you
But I ain't nearly halfway through
I've got a few more things I'd like to say to you tonight
Get Ready

You don't need to change
A thing about you, Babe
I'm telling you, from where I sit,
You're one of a kind

Relationships, I don't know why,
They never work out and they make you cry
But the guy that says goodbye to you is out of his mind

You always did kind of drive me crazy
And it pissed me off because I let it faze me
But I never wanted my time with you to end

Now I'm back in town for a day or two
But mostly I came back just to see you
I'm leaving now but I don't want to go

You don't need to change
A thing about you, Babe
I'm telling you, from where I sit,
You're one of a kind

Relationships, I don't know why,
They never work out and they make you cry
But the guy that says goodbye to you is out of his mind.

Not that much I care about in this issue. I do want to see 300 (Dominic West, yum) but this article is more about the $$ than the movie. (Later, the review gives it a B+.)

Quote of the Day: "You're thinking your kids are gonna grow up quicker because they heard the word fuck than from thinking they should be shoving their tits in people's faces?" - Lily Allen on why her (much criticized) swearing in her tunes is actually less offensive than the behavior of Paris Hilton and others. I have to agree.

Agreed. If you believe "everything happens for a reason" I think you're reaching for straws. And if your version is "it's God's will" well, then I just have to laugh. There's this little philosophical concept called "free will" you may want to acquaint yourself with.

Jen recommended this album to me ages ago; I bought it, liked it, but (for who knows what reason) didn't wind up listening to it that much at the time. I am really digging it these days.

Quotes of the Fourth Day of the First Week of the New Year.

As useless as tits on a boar.
-from a Mel Bochner "piece of art"

Destruction is easier than harmony, but not more powerful.

Album: Damien Rice "9"

Beautiful. Really heartbreakingly mindblowingly beautiful. Quiet, and loud, and whispers, and shouts, and loves, and hates, and fears, and dreams. Beautiful.

Lyric of the Day: Waking up without you is like drinking from an empty cup...

Lyric of the Day.

There's nothing left to eat in this house / but your heart.

Thought of the day: Damn you, Gomez, get out of my head.

All weekend Kysa had "Cruel to Be Kind" running through her head. Each morning when she'd wake up, she'd say "You know what I hear?" and start humming it again. I kept asking "Oh is that 'Kind to Be Cruel' again?"

Today I have Gomez "See the World" ringing out over and over again. The lyrics keep leaping to mind. STOP IT ALREADY.

Ego of the Day.

...nobody knows what they want out of players except me, nobody can tell a player what he's doing wrong, nobody can find a player who can play but he's not playing, like I can. I can do that in my sleep.
--Bob Dylan (interviewed in Rolling Stone).

You can argue about whether he's earned it/whether it's deserved, but agree or not, he does have a huge ego. (You should hear my dad on Dylan in the 60s. He still can't listen to him, despite his sometimes amazing lyrics, because of things he said & did then.)

Quote of the Day.

The way I see it, the only difference between being married and being single is the type of repulsive critter you have to deal with.

Ah, the wisdom of the random web surf.

Song of the Day.

I hate everyone

All the people on the street
I hate you all
And the people that I meet
I hate you all
And the people that I know
I hate you all
And the people that I don't
I hate you all

Oh I hate you all.

I hate most everybody
But most of all
I hate...
I hate...
I hate YOU.

--"I Hate Everyone" Get Set Go, Grey's Anatomy Vol. 2

How often do you hear "big stupid jerk" in the lyrics to a song? Priceless.

"Reminder" of the Day.

Revolution gives ordinary people the false belief that they can remake not just themselves, their country, and the whole wide world but human nature itself. That such grand designs always fail, that human nature is immutable, that everyone's idea of perfection is different -- these truths are all for a time forgotten.

A quote for this dreary Monday.

Some measure of generality must be present in any high-class theorem, but too much tends inevitably to inspidity. 'Everything is what it is, and not another thing', and the differences between things are quite as interesting as their resemblances. We do not choose our friends because they embody all the pleasant qualities of humanity, but because they are the people they are. And so in mathematics; a property common to too many objects can hardly be very exciting, and mathematical ideas also become dim unless they have lenty of individuality.
--GH Hardy "A Mathematician's Apology"
